ChatGPT Ignored Us Until We Fixed One Number (0 to 134 in Under 4 Months)
Founder of OGTool, Ex-Stanford, Bootstrapped to $1M organically
The short answer: ChatGPT and other AI assistants mostly cite websites that search engines already trust, and that trust is built with backlinks from other trusted websites. We took a brand new domain, vson.ai, from a domain authority of 0 to 134 in under four months by getting it linked a few times a week from a network of established sites. In that time it went to winning 20 keywords a week across Google, AI Overviews and ChatGPT, and Vision went from 0 paying customers to 14, with $22,478 in revenue.
Every company wants to be recommended by ChatGPT right now. Most are trying to get there with content: more blog posts, more pages, more "AEO optimization". Content matters. But if search engines don't trust your website, it doesn't matter how good the content is. You aren't in the game.
Why ChatGPT keeps citing Reddit, G2 and Forbes
Ask ChatGPT for the best tool in almost any category and look at the sources. You'll see the same websites again and again: Reddit, G2, Forbes, big publishers.
That isn't a coincidence. Before an AI assistant answers, it searches the web and reads the top results. Those results are ranked, in large part, by how much the search engine trusts each website. SEO tools call this score domain authority (or domain rating).
Here is how the websites AI assistants love compare with a brand new startup:

Domain authority on a 0 to 1000 scale and websites linking to each site. DataForSEO, 20 October 2026.
If a shopper asks ChatGPT a question and Forbes has written about it, and so has a startup with a domain authority of 0, Forbes wins. Every time.
We've seen this in the data, too. When we scored 87 websites with DeepSeek's search API, the number of quality backlinks a site had was the strongest predictor of how much DeepSeek trusted it. Sites with almost no quality links weren't in its index at all.
Domain authority comes from backlinks
A backlink is another website linking to yours. Search engines treat each one as a vote of confidence, and votes from trusted websites count far more than votes from junk ones. Forbes has a high score because more than a million websites link to it, including the likes of Yahoo and Google.
So the real question is: how does a new company get links from trusted websites?
What didn't work
We tried the usual approaches first:
- Freelancers on Fiverr. Cheap link packages, mostly from sites that exist only to sell links.
- Buying links. We spent about $1,000 paying other websites for placements.
Total garbage. The links came from low-quality sites, and our domain authority barely moved.
What worked: a network of trusted sites
What actually moved the number was a network of real businesses that link to each other. Each site in the network is an established company website, not a link farm. The sites that linked to vson.ai had domain authority between 177 and 246.
Here's how it works. Each member publishes useful blog posts on its own site, and those posts link to other members where it's relevant. Everyone gets a few new links from trusted websites every week, steadily, without anyone chasing links by hand.
We put vson.ai, a brand new domain, into the network.

vson.ai, 5 July to 20 October 2026. DataForSEO, OGTool tracking and Stripe.
Here's what happened to its domain authority, month by month:
| Domain authority | Websites linking to it | Backlinks | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 July | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 8 July | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| 31 July | 49 | 8 | 16 |
| 31 August | 74 | 15 | 25 |
| 30 September | 116 | 36 | 75 |
| 20 October | 134 | 51 | 96 |

Two things stand out:
- It doesn't take thousands of links. vson.ai reached 134 with links from 51 websites. What matters is where the links come from.
- Steady beats sudden. The growth came from a few links a week, every week. There was no single jump that did the work.
What domain authority actually gets you
Authority is only useful if it turns into visibility and revenue. For vson.ai, both moved.
Keywords. In early August, vson.ai won 0 keywords a week. By the week of 12 October, it was winning 20 a week: 17 on Google, 6 in Google AI Overviews and 5 in ChatGPT answers.
Revenue. On 5 July, before vson.ai was in any search index, Vision had no paying customers and no revenue. By 20 October it had 14 paying customers and $22,478 in revenue. Between 13 July and 12 October, the site also picked up 28,658 search impressions and 115 signups.
ChatGPT was a small source of signups by volume, just 3 of the 115. But 2 of those 3 became paying customers. That's a tiny sample, so don't read too much into the exact rate. It does match what we see across clients: people who arrive from an AI recommendation have usually already decided what they want.
Content optimization is not enough
There's a lot of talk in AEO (answer engine optimization) about formatting content for AI: FAQ blocks, schema, the right headings, answer-first paragraphs. All of that helps, once you're in the race.
But AI assistants only read pages that search engines already rank. If your domain authority is 0, your perfectly formatted page isn't one of them. Domain authority is the entry ticket. Content decides how well you do once you're in.
It's working for new customers too
We've now built this into OGTool, so customers join the same network. One customer joined last week with a domain authority of 0. Nine days later it's at 52, with links from four network sites rated between 134 and 177. vson.ai took 24 days to pass 50. And we've just brought another new site in.

What to do this week
- See where you stand, free. OGTool's free report shows your domain authority next to your competitors' average, your DeepSeek authority score, and the 60 keywords we'd target for you. It takes a couple of minutes.
- Count who links to you, not how many links you have. A few links from trusted, relevant websites beat hundreds from junk sites.
- Stop buying cheap links. They mostly come from link farms, and they didn't move our number.
- Get linked by trusted sites every week. This is the part OGTool does for you. Join the network and established business websites link to yours several times a week, while we write the content that wins your keywords. It's what moved vson.ai from 0 to 134.
Here's the network today:

How we measured it
- Domain authority: DataForSEO's domain rank, on a 0 to 1000 scale. This is the scale OGTool reports for clients. It is not the 0 to 100 Ahrefs DR scale, so 134 here is not comparable to an Ahrefs score of 134.
- Websites linking to it: distinct referring domains, from DataForSEO.
- Domain authority history: a daily DataForSEO snapshot of vson.ai from 8 July 2026, the first day it appeared in DataForSEO's index.
- Keywords won: distinct keywords where vson.ai ranked on Google page 1, was cited in a Google AI Overview, or was named in a ChatGPT answer, counted once per week. Checked daily.
- Paying customers and revenue: Vision's Stripe account, all successful payments net of refunds, up to 20 October 2026. The 5 July figures are the totals on that date. The first payment came on 6 July.
- Signups and impressions: vson.ai's own signup attribution and search tracking, 13 July to 12 October 2026.
- Network sites: domain authority as of 20 October 2026.
How OGTool gets you trusted backlinks
Our customer network. OGTool customers are established businesses whose websites have a median domain authority of about 150. Content that earns its place. We track the questions your buyers ask ChatGPT every day, find the competitor pages being cited, and turn them into posts on your site. We tell you the day you start getting cited.
Want to know your domain authority, how it compares with the sites ChatGPT cites in your category, and how many links you need to close the gap? We'll run the numbers for your brand and your top three competitors, free.
