How to Raise Domain Authority in 2026 (What Actually Moves Your DR)
The short answer: Your domain authority goes up when established, trusted sites link to you, every week. Not directories, not link farms, not paid link packages. Get a steady stream of links from real businesses and your domain rating (DR) climbs every month. In the last 30 days, sites in our network gained between 8 and 53 DR this way.
First, check your domain authority
What domain authority is
Domain authority, also called domain rating (DR), is a score for how much search engines trust your site. We use DataForSEO's scale, from 0 to 1000. It's based on who links to you: how many sites, and how trusted those sites are.
It matters because it decides who ranks:
- Google ranks trusted sites first. If the sites on page 1 have far more authority than you, a great page still won't get you there.
- AI answers cite what ranks. ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity search the web and quote the top results. In our 100-prompt DeepSeek study, it cited 83% of #1 results.
- So low authority means no traffic from either. Raise it, and both Google and AI start showing you.

How to raise domain authority: 5 steps
![]()
- Compare yourself to your competitors. A "good" DR is whatever beats the sites you're up against. The checker above shows you the gap.
- Get links from established sites. Real businesses with real traffic, in or near your space. One link from a trusted site is worth more than a hundred from a directory.
- Get links every week, not once. DR follows a steady flow of new links. A burst of links followed by nothing stalls.
- Get links from new sites, not more from the same one. The number of distinct sites linking to you drives the score. The tenth link from the same site adds very little.
- Point links at pages worth ranking. Links into answer-first posts raise your DR and help those posts rank for the keywords you want.

Then track your DR every week, next to your competitors'. If it's flat for a month, your links aren't coming from trusted sites.
What doesn't work
![]()
- Directory submissions and cheap link packages. Most come from sites that exist only to sell links. Search engines discount them.
- Buying placements. We spent about $1,000 paying sites for links. The links came from low-quality sites and our DR barely moved.
- Chasing link count. In our study of DeepSeek's authority scores, the number of backlinks didn't predict the score. Links from established sites did.
What it looks like when it works
Here's the domain rating of 12 sites in our network over time (client names hidden). Each one gets links from the other established sites in the network, several times a week:

Every line goes up and stays up. ogtool.com is at DR 165, up 28 in 30 days. vson.ai is at 153, up 34. One client is at 262, up 26.
We post every client's DR to Slack every morning. Here's today's update:

- One brand-new site went from DR 0 to 53 in 30 days.
- One client went from DR 91 to 118 in 30 days.
- One client already at the top of its market added 24 DR, to 260.
How long it takes to raise domain authority
Weeks to see the first movement, a few months for a big jump:
- Vision (vson.ai) launched a new domain in July with no backlinks. It's at DR 153 four months later, and went from 0 paying customers to 14 in that time.
- ClaimKit went from DR 26 to 113 in five months.
| ClaimKit domain rating | |
|---|---|
| April (start) | 26 |
| May | 49 |
| June | 66 |
| July | 91 |
| August | 109 |
| September | 113 |

How OGTool raises your domain authority
OGTool is a network of trusted sites. We link customers with other established businesses, so everyone's DR goes up.

Step 1: Link your site. We find your competitors and compare your DR with theirs.
Step 2: We build backlinks. Our clients' sites average DR 150. Their content links to yours several times a week, so your DR climbs.
Step 3: We publish answer-first posts. For keywords you can win at your current DR, then harder ones as it rises. See the AEO guide for how that works.
Step 4: We track it. Your DR every day, and when you show up on Google, AI Overviews and ChatGPT.
Domain authority FAQ
What is a good domain authority?
One that's higher than your competitors'. There's no universal number. Check yours against theirs with the checker above, and aim for the average of the sites on page 1 for the keywords you want.
Is domain authority a Google metric?
No. Google doesn't publish a trust score. Domain authority and domain rating are estimates from SEO tools, but they measure what Google rewards: links from trusted sites.
How fast can I raise domain authority?
With links from established sites every week, expect movement within a month. Vision went from DR 0 to 153 in four months.
Can I buy backlinks to raise my DR?
You can, but it rarely works. Sites that sell links are usually low quality, and search engines discount them. Links from real businesses are what move the score.
Does domain authority matter for ChatGPT?
Yes. ChatGPT and other AI answers search the web and cite pages that rank, and pages rank when their site has authority.
